Sleater-Kinney – “You’re No Rock and Roll Fun” from All Hands on the Bad One, (2000, Sub Pop Records)
Things I’ve taken for granted in my life: the utility of a well-placed tambourine. The absolute brilliance of Sleater-Kinney pre-The Woods.
All Hands on the Bad One, I was humbled to learn, was Sleater-Kinney’s fifth studio album. Did I really understand, in the year 2000, that they had five records out? I think I maybe didn’t. That is so super impressive, on par with just how impressive it is that you really have to listen closely to “You’re No Rock and Roll Fun” to notice the lack of a bass. S-K had it so dialed in at this point, too, that you don’t even miss it.
And this song is just so goddamn fun! It has Pixies energy without sounding like the Pixies somehow, is catchy as hell, with definite summer beach vibes, which, if the Beach Boys taught us anything, absolutely must have some incredible vocal harmonies (I think even including drummer Janet Weiss), and so guess what? It does.
Oh, and if we’re going to call S-K a riot grrrl band, or at the very least acknowledge their place within that lineage, we have to also acknowledge that the Go-Gos were sort of a prototypical example of that movement, and to my mind, the near shouted vocals on “come on, I like the dark” remind me of the super fun time party energy of a song like “We Got the Beat.” That said, and respect to Belinda and them, Sleater-Kinney rocks a million times harder.
Lyrically, from what I can tell, it has to do with people who take themselves too seriously and who are maybe also dudes who act in a condescending manner towards female musicians. I would love to see a list of dude bands who acted like this, because I’m quite sure that none of them are as accomplished or noteworthy as S-K.
Stupid dudes.
